| I got the honor of opening each individual casing, counting each shell and then measuring the size of the baby whelk. The largest one is about 4 millimeters. This is a nice break from having to watch the whelk videos. But I only got to the 12th casing out of 77. So it's going to be another counting day. I also got to talk to another scientist/worker at the lab, Nate. He's pretty nice even though he whacked his head against the cutting board under our experiment. The pictures to the side are showing the method of counting the eggs. Tomorrow will be the end of the first week! Eeek! |

Another computer day and whelk watching. To start off, Shelley and I had checked the camera that we set up yesterday, and realized that the red light was shinning directly onto the food. The use of the red light is so that the camera can record what is going on in the dark without having to shine a light and disrupt the animal. With that being done, we went and sat in the office lounge area. I started watching more whelk videos and counting them. That is exhausting mental work and I am fried right now. I know Shelley is also brain-tired, so we called it a day slightly earlier than yesterday. So we started to shovel out my uncles boat from the driveway. It's kinda nice to be doing something mindless as shoveling after looking at a computer screen all day. Now I get to stare at the computer and write about my day.
Today was the first day of working. I had showed up Friday night and had a few days to actually settle into the swing of life. At the lab today, I got to meet all the whelks and the other scientists here. Today was just a planning day for figuring out what the next three weeks were gonna hold. We actually set up a camera over a tank to see when the baby whelks eat in comparison to when the adults eat. The lab hasn't had running water for an exact week and they don't know when it's going to get fixed. It was an easy day, and I'm excited for the rest of the internship!
